God has a special love for the youngest among us, and calls us to treasure, care for and teach them. Read on to learn about our many offerings. With questions, please contact our Director of Children’s and Family Ministries, Shelley Byrnes, at ShelleyByrnes@TheNativity.net.
Nursery Care for ages 0-3: Loving, professional caregivers provide safe activities for our youngest children, including stories, music and fun.
Nativity’s multi-age Children’s Chapel allows children to connect with the meaning of the liturgy and the beautiful traditions of the Episcopal Church. It is essentially the first part of the communion service, done in a format that children can relate to and understand. As children engage in a fun and joyful worship experience, they become familiar with the liturgical language of the church, The Book of Common Prayer and The Hymnal. Children join their families in church for communion. Children’s Chapel happens during the first half of the 10:00 service.
Children’s Sunday School, Sundays 11:00 – 11:45, during the program year, August through May. Families can attend the 10:00 service and stay for Christian Formation for all ages (including three options for adults – click here for more information). Middle School Youth Group happens during the regular Sunday School time, and then the middle schoolers stay on for lunch and games with the high schoolers till 12:30. Youth in 9th – 12th grades and up stay till 1:30 for lunch and High School Youth Group!
Here’s what we do in our children’s programs:
Spark! for ages 4 through 2nd grade, explores the stories of our faith through the eyes of young children. Each child receives his or her own Story Bible, to mark in, put stickers in, and make their own. Pre-K and Kindergarten children explore the large concepts of faith, such as love, forgiveness, hope, faith – through the stories of the Bible. First and second graders concentrate on characters and situations they can identify with in their own lives. Spark happens during the Christian education hour for all ages, 11:00 – 11:45. This year’s Sunday school begins at Nativity on August 21, 2016.
Pepsicola (anagram of Episcopal) Club! for grades 3 through 5 is a video enhanced, story-based program that journeys through the Church year with magnificent rhythms and stories. The emphasis of this curriculum is to encounter with reverence, and nurture with care, the spiritual potential already present in the daily lives of all children. In this class, children encounter God and the Christian community in many ways: through storytelling, poetry, drama, writing and literature; through movement, games, rituals and mealtimes; through music, painting, sculpting and journaling; through nature, environmental concerns, multicultural appreciation and healthy relationships; through Christian fellowship, liturgy, service and participation in ministries of justice and peace. Once a month on a Friday evening, the 3rd through 5th grade Club meet for pizza, games and fun.

Acolytes, Lectors and Chalicists – Acolytes are important members of our worship team, assisting Pastor Susan, the worship leaders and the congregation as we praise and serve God in worship. Nativity’s Altar servers ministry is available for all young people in 3rd grade and above. Acolytes serve during the worship service as Crucifers (who carry the cross), torch bearers (who light the candles), and assist during the Gospel, the offering and Communion. Lectors read the scripture lessons, and chalicists serve the chalice of wine at communion. Serving as an altar server is a fulfilling way to worship and connect with God on a personal level. Become a part of the Nativity Worship Team! For more information about being on the team, please contact our Pastoral Associate, The Rev. Wayne Whitney, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Children’s Choir under the direction of Ilona Kubiaczyk-Adler is open to all children ages 6 through 13 and is a time of fun, joyful singing and training in musicianship. It is also a very special ministry of the children where they are encouraged and supported in their gifts. For more information, please see our Music Page, or contact Dr. Ilona at email@example.com or 480-307-9216.
