Rector TransitionWritten by Wayne Whitney on May 18, 2017
February 25, 2018 is the Day of Discovery
It has been a few months since I last updated you on our search progress. I was letting the dust settle after Fr. Gary joined us. Plus, there really wasn’t much to say. I have been so thrilled to have Fr. Gary with us and Aind his sermons each week inspiring, hope you all do as well.
Let me take this opportunity to tell you what is happening in the next few months.
As you may know, each year 3 members of the vestry rotate off and the congregation votes on new members at the Annual Meeting. This year the members who are rotating off are Darrell Spencer, Colleen Whichello and Steve Smith. The nominating committee (Darrell, Colleen, Steve and Fr. Gary) will be meeting to discuss nominations shortly. If you are interested in joining the vestry please let me or any of the nominating committee know by December 11, 2017. The term will be for 3 years.
Fr. Gary has asked me to stay on as Sr. Warden. I am honored to do so and hope that I can continue to serve Nativity and God’s plan for us.
The annual meeting is January 28, 2018.
The Day of Discovery is on February 25, 2018. The Day of Discovery is the primary opportunity for The Nativity Community to provide input into the search process. From this input, The Vestry will articulate the goals for Nativity and develop criteria for the selection of a new rector. Your input is vital. After this, the search committee will be appointed by The Vestry to carry out the task of reviewing candidates. The search committee will present a short list of candidates to The Vestry. The Vestry will then discern who the best candidate is for Nativity.
Because of timing and the work required it is entirely possible that we will not have a rector called by the end of 2018. If it looks like that is a reality, the Vestry is proposing that the 2018 Vestry will be “frozen” until our permanent rector is called.
This would allow for continuity throughout the search process. Continuity in the Vestry during the search process is vital and is recommended by The Bishop, our consultant and Fr. Gary, all of whom have vast experience with this process. We would hold a “special election” to obtain your approval before freezing the Vestry. After the new rector is called, the Vestry would rotate off as normal.
As always, please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you, Suzanne Cohen Sr. Warden
